Program Description:

FLP Japan Brochure
This program introduces traditional and contemporary Japanese art, architecture, and visual culture through a unique approach combining in-depth historical study (led by Lei Xue) and the hand-on artistic practice (led by Yuji Hiratsuka). We will view and discuss works of art and architecture in world-class museums, historical sites, traditional villages and modern cities. The program will be taught in Tokyo, Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto.

Areas of Study

Students will enroll in ART 313: Art in Japan (3 credits) Bacc Core or ART 399: Special Topics in Art (3 credits).

Co-led by art history and studio art faculty, this course introduces major forms of Japanese art from Buddhist sculpture, golden screens, Zen paintings, to Ukiyo-e woodblock print, as well as contemporary art scene. Essential themes include the relationship between artistic production and major sociopolitical development, cultural exchange in a broader East Asian context, and the impact of religion, region, gender, and class on the appearance of traditional and contemporary Japanese art.

This program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students in any majors.
